The number of sails should be even for the windmill to function. Thus if one fails on a four sail another has to be removed to make them two.

Benefits of utilising windmill energy

Increasing the number of sails increases the energy output There is no air or water pollution involved Windmills do not take up a lot of space in their establishments therefore farming and ranching space is not compromised The energy from a single windmill can generate a high amount of energy Wind energy is renewable and clean unlike the fossil fuels. It is obtainable in areas were electric lines cannot be installed There is little expense run in repairing and installing windmills as compared to electric pumps The amount of energy generated from the windmill is dependent upon; wind speed, wind speed increases with higher altitude. Windmills are structured to be high and attempt to create as much energy as possible Installing the windmill for energy takes a short time and energy is soon generated.

Windmill energy has resolved energy problems in a number of areas and made some land activities possible and has proven to be an adequate alternative source of energy.

Technology has advanced to the point where we can use wind energy to supply our home with electricity, electricity that we don’t have to pay your utility companies for.

Wind turbines are not the huge windmills you see in the fields. They have come a long way, and gotten smaller. While bigger is better when it comes to harnessing wind power, todays technology has made it possible for even a small turbine to generate enough electricity for your household use.

One small turbine won’t be enough to power your whole home but it can substantially cut your electric bill. For many people they have seen an 80% reduction in their bills.

Being able to generate around 60% of the electricity you need with an easy to build wind turbine just seems to make sense.

To build your own turbine you’ll need to find a do it yourself manual that can walk you through the process step by step.

The parts you’ll need to assemble your turbine can be found anywhere: at local hardware stores or home improvement stores. It shouldn’t cost you any more than $200 to buy the materials.

You don’t need to be an engineer or a carpenter to build your own turbine. It will only take a day or so depending on how much time you can give the project.

So if you can build your own turbine for around $200 and it only takes you a few days to build it, and you can save thousands of dollars on your energy bills, why wouldn’t you?

You can use wind energy to cut your utility bills and you can start today, it’s simple and it’s economical to do. Go for it now.

Many experts have predicted that our reserves of fossil fuels will be exhausted in about twenty years. Whether or not you believe that’s true one thing is clear: it’s time we started finding alternative energy sources.

Wind energy is one of the most viable forms of alternative energy sources available today. We are lucky in that current advances in technology have made it feasible for wind power to be used by the average homeowner.

Before you decide if wind power is the best way for you to go, check over this list of advantages to using wind power:

1. Wind power is clean and will not pollute or harm the environment.

2. It is renewable. Unless things change dramatically there will always be wind. Wind is always being ‘created’.

3. Wind power is plentiful. Anywhere you go on the planet you will be able to find wind. Unlike fossil fuels we won’t be able to use up all the wind on the planet.

4. Inexpensive to install. To really benefit from wind energy you should build your own turbine. To buy one would cost thousands and take much longer for you to recoup your investment.

But you can easily build your own for only a few few hundred dollars. It’s an easy project that will only take a few hours of your time.

One turbine won’t be enough to provide all your energy needs. In order to go completely off the gird you would probably need a combination of wind and solar energy.

But one turbine is enough to help you save hundreds of dollars on your utility bills while enabling you to use that much less fossil fuel.

All in all, using wind energy to supply some of your household electrical needs just makes sense, for you and the planet.

Electric Temperature Controls

If you have an electric heater, you can install a device that allows the water heater to shut down operation while no one is home or everyone is asleep. This will reduce heat loss. Your utility company or a plumber can help you install this device.

Heat Traps

Several heat traps may be installed on the water lines in the house. Ball valves may be installed on the cold and hot lines directly above the water heater. These valves will physically block heat inside the pipes and tank from escaping up and out of the water heater. The ball valves do cause some slight flow restriction though that may be noticable during high volumes of water use. Another way to create a heat trap is to take your flex connectors at the top of the water heater and bend them into an inverted U shape if at all possible. Heat cannot travel past the top of the U.

Low-Flow Showerheads

Attaching these to your showerhead simply uses less water and in turn less heat. It’s as simple as that. Low-flow aerators can be attached to sink faucets as well. A very effective way to save energy and money.

Pipe Insulation

Insulating the hot lines will save heat as well. Closed-cell foam can be wrapped around the pipes and makes the job go very quickly. Insulation blankets can be used also. Get thicker blankets rather than thinner ones. Different types of pipe require different size insulation too. Copper and galvanized pipes have different thicknesses even though they both say 1 inch. Don’t forget to wrap the cold pipes three inches away from the water heater too. Do not, however, cover unions or fittings and ends of pipes with insulation. Any leaks will be more severe if insulation is covering these spots. Never cover the draft diverter directly above gas water heaters. This could cause the insulation to catch on fire. Different insulations come with different self-adhesives. It does not matter much which type you use. If you need to tape the insulation though, use gas wrap tape, which looks like electrical tape with writing on it. Avoid using duct tape since it will wear out faster. Use scissors to cut the tape and insulation if necessary. Finally, plastic ties are another way of holding insulation to pipes as well.

Recirculating Systems

Recirculating loops can be installed by any water heater manufacturer. These are very efficient but expensive to install.

Vent Dampers

For gas heaters only, a vent damper is a metal flap just above the heater. Either a motor or actual heat is used to open the vent flap. The vent will never be all the way shut at any time just in case of unexpected heat going up the draft diverter. It is unknown how effective these devices are, but they seem to work better for indoor water heaters.

Water Heater Blankets

This idea is best used for water heaters that are outdoors or in naturally warm rooms. Purchase insulation that has a ranking of at least R-11. The energy saved will be substantial compared with lighter insulation such as R-6. Wrap the entire water heater around and cut holes for all the fittings such as the T&P valve, cold lines if any gas burner housing on gas water heaters or electrical elements on electrical water heaters. Note that leaks on the water heater will be difficult to see if the water heater is covered in a blanket and rusting is more of a problem. However, the energy savings from this idea make it worth the risk. Periodically check for wetness underneath the blanket after installing it.

With companies finding new ways to use renewable energy resources, solar energy is going to be more important. Solar energy is one of the best renewable energy sources because it is so abundant. We’ll never have a sun drought, we’ll never have to wait for the sun to pick up nor will we have to drill into earth like with many of the other renewable energy resources. However, to use solar power, we need solar panels. Solar panels are important because without them the idea of solar energy would be useless.

Solar panels work in two different ways. First there are solar cells that convert light energy into electricity. This is a little on the expensive side, which doesn’t make it as popular as the way energy is used now. However, they are found on a number of products. Space shuttles and satellites use them. Parts of these are covered in solar panels. These objects have the space for all the panels it would need. Another way to use solar panels is by using the heat from the sun. The solar panel attracts the heat and heats up a liquid with a low boiling point. This liquid is transferred to water where steam is used in a generator. This process is simple, cheap and effective.

Solar panels come in different forms and there is no exact shape for one. There are different versions of solar power as well. There is concentrated solar power, which is a sea of mirrors combined together to attract the sun’s heat. These are usually out in the desert and use thermal energy to create ways to heat homes, heat water and power machines. This type of energy is a little more expensive than wind energy, but costs less than photovoltaic energy, which is commonly used in households.

It has become cost effective to use solar power to heat and power your home. In the beginning stages of the production of solar panels, it took adventurous people to take a chance on it. Since the early stages, solar panels have been modified to attract to sun better. Different types of metal have been tested to see what works best. In the concentrated solar panels, which is also known as parabolic trough solar, aluminum is the best overall metal for its ability to attract the sun and sturdiness in an outside environment. The technology is getting cheaper for residents to use as the process gets more refined.

Solar panels are important to the evolution of the society. It is important for countries, such as the United States, to move away from the dependency on foreign oil and to use energy resources that are readily available. No one can deny the sun isn’t a steady resource. Even on cloudy days, there should be enough light and leftover energy to power homes through the day. More countries have to discover ways to use solar panels as part of everyday life. The problem is it is still cheaper to use fossil fuels in the short term. In the long run, solar panels will be everywhere making energy cheaper than before.

The advantages of solar energy outweigh those of conventional energy. The sun is freely available as natural energy as the only expense we have is installing the equipment to harness this energy for use. We can recover the costs needed to use the sun’s energy much faster than it takes to recover from using conventional energy. Instead of connecting to a gas or electricity by linking up to power grids, the recovering units stand on their own, and there is a limitless amount of solar energy for supply. It is also safer for the earth’s atmosphere as there are no gas emissions.

Solar energy can be recovered in several ways:

1. Focussing Collectors: These are made up of moveable mirrors, called Heliostats, which moves to track the sun to make it more efficient, so that it can provide a temperature reaching 4000 degrees C. This high temperature is ideal for use in a solar furnace for research and industrial use that is environmentally free. Focussing collectors can also be used to generate electricity by using the heliostats to focus the energy to a boiler, which will turn the water into steam. Focus collectors would be good to used for generating solar electricity.

2. Flat Plate Collectors: These consist of a system of pipes and insulation that are useful for providing heat via water that is heated in the pipes; ideal for homes and schools for such applications like heating swimming pools for example. They are smaller in size than the focussing collectors so are cheaper although they do not provide as much heat.

3. Solar Distillation: Solar distillation is similar to Flat Plate Collectors except it provides distilled water and not heat. Tanks or ditches are installed to the roof of a house and sea water is placed in them. Solar energy then heats this water and once it is hot enough it evaporates, turning into water vapour and then condenses into liquid water. This fresh, distilled water is then collected into a reservoir.

4. Solar Electricity: Solar electricity is generated from solar energy in two ways – by the use of Focussing Collectors and Photovoltaic Cells. Photovoltaic are thin pieces of semiconductors which directly convert solar radiation into solar electricity.

Solar energy does not require any fuel because it is a natural source and is freely available; also for that reason the price cannot be affected by demand and supply of fuels. Being natural and pure, it does not cause any pollution which would be released into the atmosphere, so we would be living healthier.

We should all be working together to so that natural and renewable resources are used to the best advantage. By using solar power we are inspiring others around the globe to follow suit. It is much cheaper to use this kind of energy compared with the other resources, such as electricity and gas. The cost of setting up electricity and gas may be low, but you continue to bills as you use this type of power. By making your home solar powered the only investment would be the initial cost of installation. Once that is in place there are no future payments, only if you have decided to use gas and electricity as a back up source for heating. Solar power has always been around in the past, today and we all hope that its availability in the future will continue.

Many people today have realized the dream of being completely off the grid by combining wind and solar energy. Small sized affordable wind generators are available today for the home user, and they are being combined with photovoltaic cells for power generation. It’s obvious that fossil fuel energy costs are going to keep on rising making it harder to afford getting power from the grid. The time is more than ripe for solar wind energy to be one of the solutions to rising energy costs, and to take us off of fossil fuel energy dependence.

Wind Turbines

Wind turbines are actually very simple machines. They consist of 3 parts: rotor blades, a shaft, and a generator. The rotor blades act like a propeller that turns the shaft when the wind flows through them. The shaft then turns the generator and a current is generated. About eighty-five percent of all off-grid systems use solar wind energy.

The new micro as well as mini wind turbines are very popular with sailors, and are now starting to be more popular with home owners in Europe and the UK. Mini turbines are very cost effective and will only cost about $1,500 to $2,500. They are perfect for generating electricity if you live off the grid in remote rural areas. It’s satisfying to think about having solar wind energy provide for all your energy needs and also knowing that you never have to depend on utility companies.

Photovoltaic Cells

The typical home solar power system consists mainly of these:

a)Photovoltaic Panels

b)Charge Controller Module

c)Batteries (optional)

d)Inverter

Photovoltaic panels convert sunlight into an electric current. The type of current generated by a photovoltaic panel array is DC or direct current. For this current to be usable in most common households, it has to be converted into AC or alternating current. That’s where the inverter comes in. It’s job is to convert DC into AC current.

Solar wind energy systems are also called hybrid energy systems because the use a combination of solar and wind power to generate electricity. The wind turbines are mostly used during the winter months (in the northern hemisphere) when the sun’s vertical rays are mostly directed toward the southern hemisphere, and days tend to be short and cloudy. During summer months, photovoltaic cells would supplement greatly along with the wind turbine.

By using hybrid solar wind energy systems, a homeowner has the option of using or omitting batteries for storage. Homeowners also have the choice of being “Grid-Tied” or “Net Metered”. This means that your solar wind energy system has the ability to provide electricity not only for your house, but the power company as well. This way, if your solar wind energy system generated more energy than was used, the energy can be sold back to the power company. When you’re selling energy back to the company, your power meter runs backward. The “net metered” system therefore is highly recommended. The grid also works as your “battery backup” when your hybrid solar wind energy system doesn’t provide for your power demands.

Net-metered systems are also recommended because they are easier to install, cost less, and offer better performance.

There were boats propelled by wind sailing along the Nile River in 5000 B.C. By 200 B.C., there were simple windmills in China pumping water. At the same time Persian were using vertical-axis windmills with woven reed sails to grind grain.

People continued to find new ways of using the wind energy. By the 11th century, people in the Middle East were using windmills extensively for food production;crusaders and returning merchants brought this idea back to Europe. The Dutch adapted the windmill and used it for draining lakes and marshes in the Rhine River Delta. When conquerors took this technology to America in the late 19th century, they began using windmills to pump water for farms and ranches, and later, to generate electricity for homes and industry.

However, industrialization, in Europe and later in America led to a gradual decline in the use of windmills. People stated to use steam engines rather than windmills. In the 1930s, the Rural Electrification Administration’s programs brought inexpensive electric power to most rural areas in USA.

Industrialization did not only led to the decline of using windmill but also sparked the development of larger windmills to generate electricity. The earliest wind turbine appeared in Denmark in 1890. In the 1940s the largest wind turbine of the time began operating on a Vermont hilltop known as Grandpa’s Knob. This turbine, rated at 1.25 megawatts in winds of about 30 mph, fed electric power to the local utility network for several months during World War II.

The popularity of using the wind energy has always changed with the price of fuels. When fuel prices fell after World War II, interest in wind turbines waned. But when the price of oil raised in the 1970s, the interest in wind turbine in the world also increased a lot.

After the oil embargoes of 1970s,new ways of converting wind energy into useful power are introduced. Many of these approaches have been demonstrated in “wind farms” or wind power plants groups of turbines that feed electricity into the utility grid in USA and Europe.

Today, the lessons learned from more than a decade of operating wind power plants, have made wind-generated electricity very close in cost to the power from conventional utility generation in some locations. Wind energy is the world’s fastest-growing energy source and will power industry, businesses and homes with clean, renewable electricity for many years to come.

In order to effectively understand the advantages of using solar energy, you need to get to know, initially, the ways solar energy is being generated. There are basically 2 forms of solar energy. We have the thermal solar energy and light solar energy. Thermal energy is believed to be an inactive solar. Its form of energy is made possible through the planning and the parts utilized to construct a house. If you incorporate windows that face the south and the objects that conduct heat, such as stone and brick, you could be able to reduce the energy you use and create energy efficient formation. The thermal energy generated through green solar power is utilized to warm water for solar hot water systems. The radiation coming from the sun creates light and heat which is seized by solar panels to generate electricity for home use.

The major known utilization of green solar power is to cutback spending. Though green solar energy components come with a huge opening investment, but you will rip the benefits in years to come. This is so because it will provide additional electricity for your home use or all of the day-to-day electricity which your home requires. If you make your own solar panel, partaking in government refund and net metering, that is a system whereby you sell the electricity which you do not need to utility power firms.
